And boy have I struggled with this…BIG time! Acceptance isn’t something that always comes naturally to most of us. I mean why would it? It’s totally understandable that we would wish for something we don’t like to be different. However, acceptance is vitally important to our happiness. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Having radical acceptance that we can not change the past, we can not change others, and even more challenging… accepting our own flaws.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As the saying goes in 12-step “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can, and wisdom to know the difference”.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Where we get tripped up is that we often deny or ignore the feelings associated with a situation we haven’t accepted. Does this sound familiar….get angry, vent or say nothing, then vow to move on. But moving on is not the same thing as accepting and releasing; moving on is pushing feelings down. They WILL come back in some form or another. The body never forgets! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Remember the only thing we really have control over in life is how we react. We can’t control the past, or how others feel, but we can offer acceptance. Acceptance that the situation was not the way you wanted it and accepting the emotions associated. You have to really feel the emotions. Grieve what you didn’t get from the situation and grieve what you got that you didn’t want. This the stepping back phase. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Only then are you able to move through the next phases of transformation. We can’t skip phase 1 and fast forward through all steps. Our body won’t allow it. Literally. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
